2016-29 | Watch Out for Fraudulent CP2000s!

Those trained in counterfeit money detection spend hours studying authentic currency. In light of a recent scam, tax preparers should take careful time to study authentic IRS correspondence, particularly the CP2000. We've recently received a copy of a fraudulent "CP2000," asking the taxpayer to mail a balance due to a P.O. Box in Austin, Texas.

The fraudulent letter has a disturbing ring of authenticity sufficient to fool an unwary taxpayer or even preparer. Study the real CP2000 and protect your clients.

On September 22, 2016, the IRS began warning taxpayers and tax professionals regarding this scheme.
